Tragic Landslides in Kerala's Wayanad: Death Toll Climbs to 256
The catastrophic landslides struck the hilly region near Meppadi last Tuesday, creating widespread havoc and destruction. As per the Press Trust of India (PTI), rescue teams, including the Indian Army, have managed to save approximately 1,000 individuals from the debris. However, the grim reality remains as over 190 people are still reported missing.
Rescue operations are being carried out tirelessly by a coalition of forces, including the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). These efforts are further bolstered by the use of specialized dog squads trained for search and rescue missions. The relentless rainfall and resultant road closures have significantly hampered rescue efforts over the past two days, but the teams persist in their mission to locate and save as many lives as possible.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy rainfall over the next few days across eight districts of Kerala, including Wayanad. This prediction has heightened concerns about further landslides and flooding in the already devastated region.
In a recent address to the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah revealed that the central government had issued warnings about potential landslides to the Kerala government as early as July 23. Despite these warnings, the state authorities were unable to evacuate the vulnerable populations to safer areas in time, resulting in the extensive loss of life and property.
