Italy's 'Path of Love' Reopens After 12-Year Hiatus
Nestled between the charming municipalities of Riomaggiore and Manarola, the Via dell'Amore spans a modest 900 meters (approximately 2,950 feet). This scenic route offers visitors an unparalleled view of the stunning Ligurian Sea, making it a coveted destination for romantics and nature enthusiasts alike. The path was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, further cementing its status as an iconic landmark.
The Via dell’Amore was unfortunately closed in 2012 following a devastating landslide that injured four Australian tourists. Since then, efforts to reopen the path have been fraught with challenges, primarily due to its delicate construction along the mountainous terrain. The path’s fragility required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the safety and preservation of the site.
According to Italy's tourism ministry, the management of Via dell'Amore falls under the jurisdiction of the Riomaggiore municipality, which now oversees its operation as an open-air museum. The initial reopening phase, from July 27 to August 8, is exclusively for the residents of the Cinque Terre region. From August 9 onwards, the path will welcome tourists, who will need to book their walk in advance and pay a nominal fee. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, guided tours are available, with a capacity limit of 400 tourists per hour.
The reopening of Via dell'Amore is expected to boost local tourism significantly, offering a rejuvenated experience of Italy's coastal beauty and historical charm. For more information on visiting the Via dell’Amore and to book your guided tour, visit the official Cinque Terre website.
