Celebrating with Prayer: A Guide to Performing Eid Salah
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the two major holidays in Islam, are joyous occasions filled with feasting, family gatherings, and of course, prayer. Eid prayers, also known as Salat al-Eid, are a special part of the celebrations. Here's a guide to performing Eid Salah, ensuring you can participate in this significant Eid tradition:
Before the Prayer:
- Timing: Eid prayers are performed after sunrise, once the sun has risen above the horizon by the length of a spear (roughly three meters). They must be completed before the sun reaches its zenith (highest point in the sky). It's best to confirm the specific prayer times with your local mosque.
- Cleanliness: As with all Islamic prayers, ensure you are in a state of taharah (ritual purity) by performing wudu (ablution).
- Attire: Dress in your finest, clean clothes.
Prayer Location:
- Congregation: Eid prayers are traditionally performed in congregation (jama'ah) in large open spaces like Eidgahs (designated prayer grounds) or mosques if space allows. It emphasizes the communal spirit of Eid.
Prayer Structure:
Eid prayer is a two-raka'ah (unit of prayer) prayer with specific characteristics:
- Takbeers: The prayer begins with a raised-hand takbir (Allahu Akbar) followed by recitation of supplications (duas) silently.
- Six Takbeers: In the first rak'ah, after reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, six takbeers are pronounced with raised hands at specific intervals during the imam's (prayer leader) recitation.
- Khutbah (Sermon): After completing the two rak'ahs, a sermon (khutbah) is delivered by the imam, offering عيد مبارك (Eid Mubarak) wishes and reflecting on the significance of Eid. There's no khutbah if praying alone.
Prayer Steps:
- Make the intention (niyyah) in your heart to perform the Eid prayer.
- Raise your hands to your ears (men) or shoulders (women) for the opening takbir (Allahu Akbar).
- Recite supplications (duas) silently.
- Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah while following the imam's recitation.
- Say takbir (Allahu Akbar) and bow (ruku') with the imam.
- Straighten up from bowing and say (Sami' Allahu liman hamida - Allah hears those who praise Him).
- Go into prostration (sujud) saying (Subhanallahi al-Adhim - Glory be to Allah, the Most Great) thrice.
- Sit back upright (jalsa) and repeat steps 6 and 7.
- Perform the second rak'ah similarly, with six takbeers after Surah Al-Fatihah.
- After completing the two rak'ahs, listen attentively to the imam's khutbah (sermon) if present.
Additional Points:
- Takbiratul Eid: It's recommended to recite takbeers (Allahu Akbar) with raised hands on the way to and from the Eid prayer location.
- Eid Greetings: After the prayer, exchange Eid greetings (Eid Mubarak) and well wishes with loved ones.
