Local Roller Derby Team Makes History with All-Indigenous Starting Lineup
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada - March 11, 2024 - The Thunder Bay Rollergirls, a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian Roller Derby Association (CRDA), shattered records last night during their season opener against the Manitoba Maulers. For the first time in professional roller derby history, an all-Indigenous starting lineup took the track.

The starting five, aptly nicknamed the "Manomin Squad" after the Ojibwe word for wild rice, dominated the first jam. Led by veteran jammer Sky "Swift Arrow" McGregor and rookie blocker Tallulah "Rolling Thunder" Stone, the Thunder Bay squad put up an impressive 17 points in the first period.

"This is a huge moment for our team and for Indigenous representation in sports," said McGregor, a veteran skater with a fierce reputation. "We've got girls here from all across North America, different tribes and backgrounds, but we're all united on the track."

The historic night wasn't just about the starting lineup. The Manomin Squad was cheered on by a passionate crowd, with many fans sporting traditional regalia and waving homemade signs. The electric atmosphere seemed to energize the skaters, who maintained a strong lead throughout the entire game.

The final whistle blew with a score of 222-148 in favor of the Thunder Bay Rollergirls. While the win itself was exciting, the night belonged to the Manomin Squad.

"We hope this inspires young Indigenous girls everywhere," said Stone, barely out of breath after the game. "Derby is a sport for everyone, and it's an amazing way to build confidence and community."

The Thunder Bay Rollergirls' next home game is on April 12th against the Saskatchewan Roller Derby Association's Queen City Riot. Tickets are expected to sell out fast, with fans eager to see if the Manomin Squad makes another historic appearance.
