Standing program on 5 demands including stopping irregularities in irrigation works in Barendra region
The Bangladesh Farmers' Association held a sit-in program in Rajshahi with five-point demands, including stopping irregularities in the distribution of irrigation water from deep tubewells in Barendra region, reforming canals and reservoirs and ensuring round-the-clock electricity facilities for irrigation.
Farmers of different districts of Rajshahi division held a sit-in program at Bangabandhu Chattar at Butter intersection of the city on Thursday at 12 noon.
Speakers at the location program said that irregularities, harassment and corruption of operators in the distribution of deep tubewell irrigation water in Barendra region should be stopped. Apart from this, they demanded to renovate canal, bill, Khaspukur and Dighi, provide round the clock electricity for irrigation, reduce the price of fertilizers and pesticides, give agricultural cards to real farmers and ensure the conservation and supply of surface water.
At the end of the sit-in program, the farmers gave a memorandum to the Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority head office. Bangladesh Farmers Association president Bijan Sarkar, joint general secretary Ajit Kumar and other farmer leaders were present at this time.
